The applicant must be at least 21 years of age. Be a citizen of the United States or an alien lawfully admitted into the United States. A legal resident of Michigan and reside in Michigan for at least six months immediately prior to application. An applicant is a resident of Michigan if one of the following applies – The applicant possesses a valid, lawfully obtained Michigan driver’s license or official Michigan personal identification card.
There is a $115 fee at your local county clerk, plus the cost of your 8-hour state-mandated training class. You must take and pass a state-mandated course before applying. The program must be certified by Michigan or a national or state firearms training organization. Detroit Arms offers this training in person at least two times a month.
An application to renew a CPL may be submitted to the county clerk, through the CPL renewal website at www.michigan.gov/cplrenewal, or by first-class mail to the MSP, not more than six months before, nor one year after, the expiration of the current CPL.
Yes – The fee for a renewal of your Michigan CPL license is $115.00 and is payable to the State of Michigan via the online renewal portal, your local county clerks office or by mailing it to the MSP CPL Division in Lansing.
You have up to 12 months to renew your license after expiration. You may not carry concealed during that time. If you go 12 months or more without submitting for a renewal you are no longer eligible to renew. You must take and pass a new 8-hour mandated training class and reapply at your local county clerk.
Visit your local county clerk – they will reissue you a copy of your license for $10.00
The applicant shall sign the statement on the application certifying that he or she has completed at least three hours of review of the required training and has had at least one hour of firing range time in the six months immediately preceding the renewal

No. In order to obtain a Michigan CPL you must take the state-mandated 8-hour training class. The clerk will waive the 6 month residency requirement if an applicant has a valid CPL from any other state. If you have a Michigan Drivers License you MUST have a Michigan CPL in order to legally carry concealed.
Yes, you may possess and use a TASER. Not a stun gun, a taser. There are significant differences between the two.
An individual who carries a concealed pistol in a pistol-free zone is responsible for a state civil infraction or guilty of a crime as follows:
- First violation: The individual is responsible for a state civil infraction and may be fined not more than $500. The court shall order the individual’s license to carry a concealed pistol suspended for 6 months.
- Second violation: The individual is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000. The court shall order the individual’s license to carry a concealed pistol revoked.
- Third or subsequent violation: The individual is guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 4 years or a fine of not more than $5,000, or both. The court shall order the individual’s license to carry a concealed pistol revoked.
